TERESOPOLIS, Brazil (AP) — The decorated career of Swedish coach Pia Sundhage in women’s soccer includes Olympic gold medals with the USA in 2008 and 2012 and a silver with her own country in 2016, national and continental titles and personal accolades. But one big gap in the 63-year-old’s coaching career is a World Cup crown. Next month she will try to achieve that with Brazil, which is also seeking its first trophy in the tournament as the great Marta nears the end of her playing days. Sundhage said in an interview with The Associated Press at Brazil’s training center in Teresopolis, outside Rio de Janeiro, she has a chance to triumph when it all kicks off in Australia and New Zealand on July 20.Her team is in Group F with France — the team that eliminated the Brazilians four years ago in the last 16 — Jamaica and Panama. “I truly believe the 10 best-ranked teams, like we are, do have a chance to go all the way,” Sundhage said. “If you look at USA, Germany, Swede...Las despedidas de Maxi Rodríguez y Román Riquelme: horarios y dónde verlas

June is Pride Month, a season intended to celebrate the lives and experiences of LGBTQ+ people and to protest threats to hard-won civil rights. In the U.S., this year’s Pride celebrations are taking place as legislators in many states seek to ban drag shows, restrict gender-affirming health care, and limit how teachers can talk about sexuality and gender in the classroom. In Colorado in November, five people were killed and several injured when a gunman shot them in a gay club. In Israel, Tel Aviv celebrated Pride for the first time since the country’s new far-right government, stacked with anti-LGBTQ+ members, took office. For more than a half-century, the annual marches have been an opportunity to demand action on specific issues such as the AIDS epidemic and same-sex marriage while also serving as a public celebration. These days, Pride celebrations and events — teeming with images of rainbows, a symbol of hope, unity and diversity for LGBTQ+ people — can be found all over th...Sports on TV for Sunday, June 25

Mercenaries from the Wagner Group of embittered warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin — some of them speeding along a highway to Moscow — on Saturday looked set for imminent clashes with troops loyal to President Vladimir Putin, who warned the rebellion risked pushing Russia into a civil war. Furious over the Kremlin’s bungled invasion of Ukraine, Prigozhin seized key strategic footholds in southern Russian on Saturday — most significantly the major city of Rostov-on-Don — while an unclear number of his forces were making a dash up the main highway to the capital. Russian government forces also appeared to shell the southern city of Voronezh on Saturday in an attempt to combat the Wagner insurrection, which is snowballing into one of the gravest threats to Putin’s 25-year rule. It is far from clear how close Wagner’s troops are to Moscow but the governor of Lipetsk, some 400 kilometers south of the capital, has reported the mercenary convoy passing through. Moscow Mayor Se...Timing out wet weather this weekend

Published Thu, 14 Nov 2024 19:24:28 GMT
As Bill Parcells so famously said, “you are what your record says you are” and for the Yankees and Mets it can probably be added “you are what the standings say you are” because the teams in front of them likely aren’t coming back to them this season — and for that matter next year either. In the Yankees’ case, the absence of Aaron Judge has shown just how naked their lineup is of All-Star caliber players. The hard truth is, the Rays and Orioles have better, younger and more athletic players at almost every position than the Yankees’. And for all the money Steve Cohen has poured into the Mets, the Braves are Exhibit A for there being no substitute for developing your own talent, especially starting pitching. That the Mets ($344 million) and Yankees ($280 million) are 1-2 in the majors in payroll and both wallowing in and around fourth place in their respective divisions is testimony to their commitments to free agency in the absence...Latest news
